York Olympic Bar Buying Guide

York Barbell offers a wide range of Olympic bars, and choosing between them isn't always as straightforward as it may seem. The lineup ranges from shorter 5' and 6' bars for general strength training to Olympic training and competition bars designed specifically for weightlifting.

Many of these bars look similar, but differences in length, shaft diameter, strength, sleeve rotation, knurling and construction can make them better suited to different types of training.

This guide breaks down the main York Olympic bars and explains what separates them, so you can choose the right bar for your training.

Start With How You Plan to Train

Before comparing individual bars, consider what you primarily plan to use your barbell for.

York's lineup covers several different types of training, from general strength exercises such as squats, bench presses and deadlifts to powerlifting-focused training and Olympic weightlifting.

The bars also vary considerably in length, shaft diameter, strength, knurling and sleeve rotation. Some are versatile general-purpose options, while others are designed specifically for Olympic training or competition.

Understanding those differences makes the rest of the lineup much easier to navigate.

York Chrome Olympic Bars

York's chrome Olympic bars are general-purpose bars designed for squats, bench presses, deadlifts and Olympic lift training. All use bushing rotation and have no center knurling, but the lineup progresses considerably in size and strength.

5' Chrome Olympic Bar 28 mm

The 5' Chrome Olympic Bar is the shortest option in the group. It has a 28 mm shaft, weighs 32 lbs and provides 6 ¾" of loadable sleeve length.

Its compact dimensions make it worth considering when space is a priority and a full-length 7' bar isn't necessary. However, the shorter sleeves provide less room for plates than the longer options.

The bar has a minimum tensile strength of 100,000 PSI and no knurl marks or center knurling.

6' Chrome Olympic Bar 28 mm

The 6' Chrome Olympic Bar provides a little more room while retaining the same 28 mm shaft and 100,000 PSI minimum tensile strength.

It weighs 33 lbs and increases loadable sleeve length to 8 ¼". It also adds single knurl marks while continuing to omit center knurling.

This makes it a middle ground between the compact 5' bar and York's full-length 7' options.

7' Chrome Olympic Bar 30 mm

The 7' Chrome Olympic Bar 30 mm represents a significant step up in strength. Its North American steel shaft has a minimum tensile strength of 170,000 PSI and a maximum weight capacity of 1,500 lbs.

At 45 lbs with 16 ¼" of loadable sleeve length, it is much closer to the dimensions expected from a traditional full-size Olympic bar.

The thicker 30 mm shaft also contributes to the bar's more rigid feel, making it particularly well suited to controlled strength movements.

7' Chrome Olympic Bar 32 mm

For an even thicker shaft, York also offers the 7' Chrome Olympic Bar 32 mm version.

It shares the 170,000 PSI minimum tensile strength of the 30 mm model but increases the maximum weight capacity to 2,000 lbs and weighs 52 lbs instead of 45 lbs. The larger 32 mm diameter creates an even thicker bar in the hands.

Both 7' models are designed for squats, bench presses, deadlifts and Olympic lift training, so the choice largely comes down to shaft diameter and the heavier construction of the 32 mm bar.

Chrome Olympic Bar Comparison
Bar Diameter Weight Sleeve Length Strength Max Capacity
5' Chrome 28 mm 32 lbs 6 ¾" 100,000 PSI —
6' Chrome 28 mm 33 lbs 8 ¼" 100,000 PSI —
7' Chrome 30 mm 45 lbs 16 ¼" 170,000 PSI 1,500 lbs
7' Chrome 32 mm 52 lbs 16 ¼" 170,000 PSI 2,000 lbs

For limited space, the 5' and 6' bars provide more compact choices. For a full-length bar with considerably greater strength and loadable sleeve space, look toward the 7' models.

York Black Oxide Olympic Bars

York's black oxide Olympic bars closely follow the chrome lineup in dimensions and intended use. The main difference is the finish: these bars feature a black oxide shaft for a more aggressive grip, along with hard chrome sleeves.

The 5' Black Oxide Olympic Bar and 6' Black Oxide Olympic Bar have the same 100,000 PSI minimum tensile strength as their chrome counterparts, while the 7' Black Oxide 30 mm and 7' Black Oxide 32 mm bars increase from 170,000 PSI to 175,000 PSI.

Like the chrome bars, all four use bushings and are designed for squats, bench presses, deadlifts and Olympic lift training.

Bar Diameter Weight Sleeve Length Strength Max Capacity
5' Black Oxide 28 mm 32 lbs 6 ¾" 100,000 PSI —
6' Black Oxide 28 mm 33 lbs 8 ¼" 100,000 PSI —
7' Black Oxide 30 mm 45 lbs 16 ¼" 175,000 PSI 1,500 lbs
7' Black Oxide 32 mm 52 lbs 16 ¼" 175,000 PSI 2,000 lbs

Chrome vs Black Oxide: What's the Difference?

The chrome models provide a traditional chrome finish, while the black oxide models pair a black oxide shaft with hard chrome sleeves. York describes the black oxide finish as providing a more aggressive grip.

The 7' black oxide bars also have a slightly higher minimum tensile strength of 175,000 PSI compared with 170,000 PSI for the 7' chrome bars.

Otherwise, the corresponding sizes share the same bar weight, shaft diameter and loadable sleeve length. The choice between comparable chrome and black oxide models therefore largely comes down to your preferred finish and grip, with the 7' black oxide options also providing slightly higher tensile strength.

York Broad Street Olympic Bar

The Broad Street Olympic Bar takes a different approach. It uses a 29 mm bare steel shaft with a minimum tensile strength of 185,000 PSI and a 1,500 lb maximum weight capacity. It weighs 45 lbs and provides 16" of loadable sleeve length. Unlike the standard chrome and black oxide bars, the Broad Street has dual knurl marks and center knurling.

Its bare steel construction is another major distinction. Bare steel requires more maintenance and will naturally develop a patina over time. The bar should be kept away from humid environments, wiped down after use and periodically cleaned and oiled.

For lifters who prefer bare steel and want a strong, rigid bar for squats, bench presses, deadlifts and Olympic lift training, the Broad Street occupies a distinct place in York's lineup.

York 7' Economy Olympic Bar

If your priority is a straightforward bar for general home gym lifting, the 7' Economy Olympic Bar provides a simpler option.

It is a 45 lb, 28 mm bar with a 1,000 lb maximum weight capacity and 14 ⅞" of loadable sleeve length. It uses bushings and has single knurl marks without center knurling.

The Economy Bar is designed for general lifting and pairs well with equipment such as an Olympic bench or power cage.

Compared with York's higher-strength and more specialized Olympic bars, it provides a straightforward option for everyday home gym strength training.

York 7' USA Power Olympic Bar

The 7' USA Power Olympic Bar brings the lineup toward heavier strength and powerlifting-focused training.

Made from U.S. steel, it has a 29 mm shaft, 185,000 PSI minimum tensile strength and 1,500 lb maximum weight capacity. The bar weighs 44 lbs and provides 16" of loadable sleeve length.

It features dual knurl marks and center knurling, while its rigid construction makes it well suited to controlled movements such as squats, bench presses and deadlifts. York also lists Olympic lift training among its intended uses.

For lifters focused primarily on powerlifting and traditional strength movements, the USA Power Olympic Bar provides a strong, full-size option within York's lineup.

York Elite Stainless Steel Olympic Weightlifting Bar

This is where the focus of the lineup shifts more clearly toward Olympic weightlifting.

The Elite Stainless Steel Olympic Weightlifting Bar is designed with greater flexibility for Olympic lifts. It has a 28 mm stainless steel shaft with a minimum tensile strength of 165,000 PSI, while its stainless steel construction provides high resistance to rust.

The bar uses bearings rather than bushings, allowing the sleeves to rotate smoothly during dynamic Olympic lifts where sleeve rotation becomes increasingly important.

It weighs 44 lbs, measures 86 ⅝" long and provides 16" of loadable sleeve length. It has single knurl marks and center knurling.

For lifters primarily performing cleans, snatches and other Olympic lifts, this bar marks the transition into York's more specialized Olympic weightlifting options.

York's Olympic Training Bar is designed specifically for Olympic lift training, with a Men's 20 kg Olympic Training Bar and Women's 15 kg Olympic Training Bar available.

Both are crafted from North American steel with a minimum tensile strength of 170,000 PSI and use needle bearings for smooth, consistent sleeve rotation during Olympic lifts.

The men's 20 kg bar has a 28 mm shaft, measures 7' long and provides 15 ⅞" of loadable sleeve length. The women's 15 kg bar uses a 25 mm shaft, measures 6.5' long and provides 12 ½" of loadable sleeve length.

Both have dual knurl marks and no center knurling.

York Elite Olympic Competition Bar

At the competition end of the lineup is the York Elite Olympic Competition Bar.

Like the Competition Training Bar, it is available as a Men's 20 kg Elite Olympic Competition Bar and Women's 15 kg Elite Olympic Competition Bar. Both have a minimum tensile strength of 190,000 PSI and are calibrated to Olympic specifications.

The biggest mechanical difference is inside the sleeves.

The Elite Olympic Competition Bar uses eight needle bearings to reduce friction and provide the sleeve rotation required for Olympic competition lifting.

York also uses quenched and tempered, cold-drawn, stress-relieved high-tensile North American steel to provide a combination of strength and flexibility.

The men's bar uses a 28 mm shaft, weighs 20 kg and includes center knurling. It is color-coded blue.

The women's bar uses a 25 mm shaft, weighs 15 kg and does not have center knurling. It is color-coded yellow.

These are York's dedicated competition bars rather than general-purpose strength bars.

Olympic Training vs Competition Training vs Competition Bars

Which York Olympic Bar Should You Choose?

With the full lineup in view, the choice becomes much easier when you start with how you plan to train.

  • For General Strength Training: Start with York's Chrome or Black Oxide Olympic Bars. They are designed for squats, bench presses, deadlifts and Olympic lift training, with several lengths and diameters available.

  • For Limited Space: Consider the 5' or 6' Chrome or Black Oxide Olympic Bars. They provide shorter alternatives to York's full-size 7' bars, although they also have substantially shorter loadable sleeves.

  • For Straightforward Home Gym Lifting: The 7' Economy Olympic Bar provides a full-length, 45 lb option designed for general lifting without moving into York's more specialized bars.

  • For a Bare Steel Bar: The Broad Street Olympic Bar combines a 29 mm shaft, 185,000 PSI minimum tensile strength, center knurling and bare steel construction.

  • For Powerlifting-Focused Strength Training: The 7' USA Power Olympic Bar provides a rigid 29 mm shaft, 185,000 PSI minimum tensile strength, center knurling and a 1,500 lb maximum weight capacity. For heavy general strength training, York's 7' 30 mm and 32 mm Chrome and Black Oxide Olympic Bars are also worth considering.

  • For Olympic Weightlifting: Look toward the Elite Stainless Steel Olympic Weightlifting Bar or York's dedicated Olympic Training Bar rather than choosing solely based on maximum weight capacity. Their dimensions and sleeve rotation are better aligned with dynamic Olympic lifts, while the Elite Stainless Steel Olympic Weightlifting Bar is also designed with greater flexibility.

  • For Olympic Competition Training: The Elite Olympic Competition Training Bar provides calibrated specifications in men's 20 kg and women's 15 kg configurations.

  • For Olympic Competition Lifting: The Elite Olympic Competition Bar is York's dedicated competition option, with eight needle bearings, 190,000 PSI minimum tensile strength and calibrated specifications.

Final Thoughts

York's Olympic bars may look similar at first, but differences in dimensions, construction, strength and sleeve rotation make them suited to different types of training.

Rather than choosing based on a single specification, consider how you plan to train and which features matter most for those movements. Once you know that, choosing between York's Olympic bars becomes much easier.
